About Us

The society was founded in 1982 by a group of hobbyists with the purpose of bringing together enthusiastic orchid growers interested in sharing cultural information, in helping members develop growing techniques, in furthering the conservation of native species, and in offering orchid education to the public at large.

We hold monthly meetings where we present varied clinics, expert guest speakers, raffles and plant sales. Clinics and speaker presentations are devoted to the culture and care of many different orchid genera. Members are encouraged to bring their own blooming orchids to meetings for "Show and Tell" to share their successes. We also take a short break during the meeting to socialize and enjoy refreshments donated by members. Growing orchids becomes an absorbing hobby, and one can never know enough about them. That is why each meeting is a forum for learning.

Contrary to their reputation, orchids are not difficult to grow, nor are they expensive. They do not require a greenhouse, or even a green thumb. In South Florida we have a special place for orchid lovers. During most of the year, the temperature and humidity are ideal for so many different orchids!, they can be grown in a screened porch, a sunny window or a tree. Rather than needing lots of care, they often thrive on neglect! And all agree that they are definitely the most diverse, fascinating and beautiful flowers in the world.

Activities of the society includes publishing and distributing our monthly newsletter "Orchidelirium"; maintaining our lending library of books, magazines, tapes, and even the occasional orchid related novels; and our auctions which are held twice annually, so members may sell divisions and extra plants. This auction is open to the public.

As a member of the American Orchid Society since 1985, we also stage our own Orchid show at the Port St. Lucie Community Center each March. Visitors to our show are treated to breathtaking displays, can attend free seminars and can purchase orchids from some of the finest vendors available.
